Where was your last ride?

Sorry about that! Recently I've been into the "sport" mode of riding ... bought an R3 to satisfy my lack of the "sport bike" history of my life. I still ride my Dino but not to the extent I used to. It pretty much started after my 24K maintenance checkup and paying the BIG bucks to get it done. Plus I've been riding the bike, primarily, with the local "scooter" group which isn't quite that often. Recently retired so my riding time will definitely INCREASE!
OK , it was good to hear from you . :)

No ride today it was too hot.

Yesterday I washed and waxed both bikes and changed the Dn-01's oil .

Okay ... FINALLY got off my duff and did a Dino ride yesterday after numerous 'other' rides (sport biking mainly). It's not that I've not ridden the DN-01 these past few months, it's just their rides weren't what I classify as 'rides' (less than 100 miles round trip). As a side note: I still leave the Dino on a trickle charger when not in use and still use the ORIGINAL battery (+8 years old). Anyways, the ride started @ 8 AM, Florida temps have been murder so early starts are in order. Met up with 13 other riders at Dunkin' Donuts. Most of the riders I had ridden before with and a few new faces. Our Road Captain was a no show so one of the 'newer' riders took over as lead and myself as tail with a 'brand new' group ride participant behind me and 2 others behind her. Direct route to a Wendy's was only about 45 minutes but our scheduled route would take almost 2 1/2 hours. (We almost always take the LONG way). 3 quarters into the ride, the 'newbie' took a curve too wide and went off the road into the grass and sand ... I saw it ALL in my rearview mirror. I went back to assess the situation: the rider was pretty much just bruised and sore, her CBR250R not too well (mainly front end damage ... totalled). The people behind me had stopped and were assisting her. I then turned back around and sped off to catch the remaining ride group, far ahead now. Thankfully the road was fairly straight and I found myself exceeding the posted speed, doing +100 mph just to catch up. Found the remaining ride pulled off to the side of the road waiting for us, not knowing that we had an accident. The group turned around and we head back to the fallen rider. She was able to contact her brother who showed after about an hour with a truck and trailer for her and the bike. She went to the ER to be checked out and everything was okay. 2 of our riders were EMT certified, we even had a Fire Department Rescue vehicle with EMTs stop while we waited for her brother. We made Wendy's @ noon, even with all the excitement. The idea of the ride was for a luncheon costing less than $6, something new we were trying. We pretty much ALL came back as one group, peeling off as we went our separate ways and EVERYONE encountered heavy rain squalls en route. By the time I got home I was bone dry and only had to towel off the Dino for it's next adventure. This ride had it all: 70 degree temps with a nice breeze, killer temps shortly thereafter, an accident with damage and injury and a heavy downpour .... welcome to Florida!

Headed out yesterday morning for a breakfast run @ 7:30 with 21 other bikes. We rode north, along the coast, for about 50 miles stopping at the Doo Wop Diner to eat (Fernandina Beach, FL). Talk about a Blast from the Past, could have sworn we were back in the 50's! Everything was authentic ... from the tables/stools/counters to the walls and the floor. Even the waitresses fit the part. I will say this, even though we definitely packed the place, from the time I ordered till I received my meal couldn't have more than 10 minutes. (Shortest waiting time EVER and I've eaten out A LOT!) Looking forward to going back there again!
I NEED to ride the Dino MORE, I'm getting spoiled by my Yamaha R3. I miss the light weight feel and nimbleness of the R3 when I'm riding the DN-01. The Dino just seems so heavy and sluggish, not that I'm even thinking of parting with the bike (Red Queen). It could be just that I'm getting up there in age and the littler bike suits me better. From what I've been reading, Honda is talking about bringing a CBR350RR to the States, possibly to replace the CBR600RR which is being discontinued after 2016. I might just find me a Honda product to replace the R3 sometime down the road (I like staying in just one family for bikes).

That all depends on WHERE you decide to ride! IF it's near swampy land or off-road, yes, you have to be CAREFUL. The only 'snakes' I'm mindful of are the 'tar snakes' because of the road repairs and heat down here. We do have some 'windy' roads, it's the heavy traffic that causes the constant road repairs!

Skinny Pete's

Since the weather was looking so-so, I decided to take a ride with the scooter people early this morning. We met at Dunkin Donuts on the other side of town for a planned luncheon in Georgia. Temps were a pleasant 75 with a spurt of heat, here and there. Mr Overcast was the norm with a few light showers ... sufficient enough to cause a few riders to suit up in rain gear. (Now where do I keep my gear ... oh yeah, no space to store it). Rain lasted all of 2 minutes ... I guess I really didn't need it! Our 40 minute 'direct' route ride took us 2 1/2 hours using a scenic path. We numbered 7, pretty much taking over the seating in this 'little hole-in-the-wall' establishment. The food and prices were well worth the trip. As long as the group is willing to accept the Dino as a scooter I'm golden! We all left together, splitting off as was necessary to get home.
I ALMOST had a moment of weakness a few days back. I was just window shopping at a few cycle dealerships, looking at the new bikes. I just so happened to be at the BMW dealership and saw their 2016 F800GT and fall in love! Just about pulled the trigger with the thought of trading in the DN-01 AND my 2011 NT700V for the bike. When I got home to do my research and see IF I was going to do it, I discovered that the NT700V was considered to be Honda's 'equivalent' to BMW's F800GT. (That's what several cycles mags feel). The Dino is therefore safe, for now. (Why spend money IF I do't have to!)

Wow, I forgot you lived up there in Jacksonville. We almost made it up that far a little while back. We took 17 all the way from home North and then cut over when we got near Spuds, then rode 13 all the way North along the water for quite a ways. Was very scenic and nice. I think we gave up around Mandarin or Fruit Cove and turned back around because the heat of the day was starting to really kick in. Stopped and relaxed gassing up at "Buddy Boys" before fighting to heat all the way back home.

Afternoon Lunch Get-together

Rode along with a few friends (6) to Papa Sean's Pizza in Baldwin, Fl to meet up with 8 others for pizza and calzones. Since the last time I was there, they knocked down a wall and made a BIGGER inside dining area. Now we were able to sit with the A/C rather than on the front porch which tends to be quite HOT especially here in Florida. After we ate, 6 of us headed to Lake City for ice cream at U-Scream Ice Cream & Smoothies ... small 'little hole-in the wall' that make their ice cream. On the return trip, we headed onto I-10 and were able to 'opened up' the bikes back to Jacksonville. The weather was great and not very hot! On a side note, last Monday I took the Yamaha R3 to ride with the BIGGER sport bikes, my sport bike was forced off the road by an oncoming passing car and I ended up slipping into a ditch. Tore off the rear mud guard/license plate and coated the left side of the bike and me in mud. No damage to me, rode the bike home. I was just a little sore and PISSED!

My wife has taken over the DN-01 and because of that , I have not ridden it much . On Saturday , I took the DN-01 to the dealership for it's 20,000 mile check-up . We decided to re-up the Honda Rider Gold maintenance agreement . 180 mile round trip to the dealer .

I have forgotten how much fun this bike is . Even with my bad back and new hip , had little problem with the trip .

Breakfast ride

Early morning breakfast ride with 13 friends/riders. 2 Meetup groups gathered at a Gate gas station at 8:30 AM, KSU @ 9. Rode 37 miles to 'The Spot' outside of St Augustine on US 1. Had pancakes, short stack ... could not finish them they were HUGE! Majority of the group, after breakfast, took a short ride through St Augustine coming back on A1A along the coast back to Jacksonville. I didn't go with the group, made my way solo back, just having a good ole time. (I had some place else to be later ... Duval ABATE monthly meeting).

BMWNEF Monthly meeting

Met a few friends (scooter people) at BoJangles here in Jacksonville for a 'early' (7:30 AM) run to the other side of town for the BMW North East Florida (BMWNEF) monthly breakfast meeting. They meet at one of the Jacksonville's Fleet Reserve Association's (FRA) chapter halls/building. The ride over was a little hectic since we had to traverse I-295, which goes around the city, and is constantly under construction. We were one of the first there and got some good seats. Slowly the hall filled up with BMWNEF members, which I am not. One of my friends even bought me breakfast which was cool! There was even someone there who brought in a 1907 BMW road bike which he rode in the Cannonball Run for 100+ year old bikes this year, didn't quite get first place though. A few weeks back, I was window shopping bikes and had stopped at the local BMW dealership, the salesman that I had met was at the meeting too. He said that they STILL had the bike that I had shown an interest in and the price incentives were still available. (Not quite ready for a BMW yet but they DO look good!) The major problem is the wife, she says you already have 3 bikes, what the hell do you NEED another one! Plus the fact that I've run out of room in the garage! Looking online, I already own a comparable bike, the NT700VA, and Hondas ARE more reliable than BMWs. Some day, MAYBE!!

I am afraid the riding season is coming to a close here . RATS

Going STRONG here now that the temps are more tolerable. (Just have to start wearing a jacket, thermals and heavier gloves, IF needed.)

The only BM I'd be interested in would be a modern K800 triple or a much better built C650. The modern twins are horrible rubbish.

Miss Owner

Had the opportunity to meet the original owner of my Dino last Saturday. When I bought the bike, 4 years ago, prior to it being shipped overseas (Europe) in a Conex box, I found the original sales receipt in with the paperwork. I tried to contact the old owner via Facebook but no response. (This was 4 years ago) About 2 weeks ago, she accepts my FB friend request and contacts me, saying that her group, Buffalo Riders, will be having a fish fry at a local HD dealership. I rode the Dino over there and she explained all that she had done with the bike since she had it: Corbin seat and Givi windshield. She had traded the bike in for a Can Am Spyder RT which she still has ... beautiful bike. She also said that she was thinking about trading the Spyder for a Goldwing. I told her that the Wing iS a pretty heavy bike to be wheeling around especially since she was having back problems. I let her sit on the bike again and even offered for her to take it for a spin which she declined. Nice lady, probably see her again since every week, pretty much, I hit up a HD dealership in the area for a burger, dog and a soda which her group usually puts on. The DN-01 is still quite the conversation piece.

Captain's BBQ in Palm Coast

Left Jacksonville with a few friends and headed down south along the East coast of Florida to Captain's BBQ for lunch. Just about a 60 mile ride, took in the scenery of the devastation of Hurricane Matthew's aftermath. The main highway had been repaired BUT the beaches were still in heavy disrepair. A LOT of LARGE stones/boulders have been added along the coast to fortify for future sand erosion. Quite a few number of homes were also heavily hit or lost. It will be awhile before 'sunny' Florida is back to what it was.
